Happy Hutch-A-Versary to Devin! He’s celebrating 5 years at Hutch and is currently a Technical Lead in our Nova Scotia office. Keep reading to find out what Dev's all-time favourite Hutch moment is and how he spends his Fridays now that we have a 4 Day Week. Oh.. and why he thinks Hutch is like an owl!

Devin's role...

What's your role at Hutch?

I am a Technical Lead for our Tools and Tech team. I mostly deal with data pipelines and tooling for our Analytics and UA teams. I end up dealing with a lot of third party APIs and systems to collect various types of data and get them into a format and location that is useful for those who need it. I also try to help automate tasks that co-workers find painful/time consuming wherever I can. That frees them up to spend more time on the important stuff they do!

What’s the most important thing you’ve learnt at Hutch?

There aren’t very many things that NEED to be fixed immediately at the expense of a good work/life balance. Having worked for companies in the past that were quite heavy with overtime usage there is always a part of me that thinks I should be working late to get my work done quicker. Which is a hard mindset to break yourself out of, but it’s something that the culture at Hutch has really helped me with.

Being a Hutchie...

What’s been your favourite moment at Hutch?

Hmmm. One moment.. I’d have to say that travelling to London HQ for the summer parties has been a highlight for sure. Being at a smaller studio in Canada you sometimes don’t get the same cultural feel or just feel disconnected in general… Those experiences during the summer and getting to be in the same space as people you mostly deal with virtually is just very refreshing.

Which 3 words best describe your time at Hutch so far?

Exciting, challenging, balanced

If Hutch was an animal, what would it be?

Owl. I think we are a wise company and who doesn’t love owls?

Car Stuff

How much do you like cars?

We enjoy them, almost too much. Aside from our Tacoma we can’t keep a car usually for more than three years…. We’ve had some fun cars over the years… Honda Civic Si, Subaru WRX and a VW Golf R. Golf R was the most fun by far. We traded the Golf R for a Toyota Highlander when we adopted our son a couple years ago, and a newfound need for cargo space vs need for speed.

Hutch Fridays

How do you spend your Fridays now that Hutch has a 4 Day Week?

Depends on the week! Sometimes it's just to get ahead of the ‘chores’ that we usually end up doing on the weekend, so we can just enjoy the weekend! Other times it's good for booking appointments that need to happen within Monday to Friday, and other times it’s to relax and get some time with MLB The Show 23 :) (that's playing baseball on my Playstation for the uninitiated!)

How did you find adapting to a 4 Day Week? Any challenges or tips / hacks you came across that helped you adapt?

I didn’t find the jump to a four day week inherently challenging. I think a lot of the work that was done companywide to reduce meeting length / frequency went a long way to make sure that I’ve had the time needed to do my work each week. From an organisational standpoint, for me, it always comes down to lists. I live for lists and checking things off (even for non-work things). I just try to make sure I do a mental dump at the end of each day to capture the things I don’t want to forget, so I just have to start the next day with whatever's on there.
