1966 Nissan Prince R380

Japan took its first steps into motorsport in the middle of the 20th Century and one of the country’s early racing icons is the Prince R380. It was built for Grand Prix racing - at the time, this meant sports cars like the Porsche 904 rather than Formula One cars - and used a Brabham-designed chassis. Prince Motors, which merged with Nissan in the same year the car was built, added a 2.0-litre straight-six engine with around 200hp behind the cockpit and finished off with some of the prettiest bodywork ever seen on a Japanese race car. It wasn’t hugely successful in racing, but since it looked so good and its engine was related to the Skyline GT-R road car of the era, it’s an icon nonetheless.

2005 Nissan Stagea 250 RX Four (M35)

Everyone loves a fast wagon, or perhaps that should be: everyone loved a fast wagon. These days it’s the SUV that appeals most to people wanting practicality and performance in the same package, but in the mid-2000s it was the estate car that did it best. The Nissan Stagea is a hidden gem in the world of Japanese performance cars, as it was a home-market model that mixed the engines and drivetrain of the sporty Skyline with a more practical body. The earlier Stageas are fan favourites for their straight-six turbo engines but even this later 2005 car with the familiar Nissan V6 under the bonnet is a cult classic. The RX Four model even gets turbo power, although the automatic gearbox prevents it from being a true cult classic.

2022 Nissan Z

Nissan’s Z line of sports cars has come to stand for affordable performance in the 21st Century, starting with the brilliant 350Z, then continuing with the 370Z and finally this, the Z. While UK and European fans will lament that emissions regulations (and poor sales of sports cars) mean it will never go on sale there, at least Japanese and US customers can still buy this brawny V6 sports car with retro-inspired looks. With 400bhp and a manual gearbox option (auto is available too) it’s aimed squarely at the enthusiast market. A base-spec Z is about the same price in the US as a top-spec Mazda MX-5 Miata, which has less than half as much horsepower.

2022 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek

Virtually every SUV in modern times is thoroughly tested with a harsh regime to make sure it can stand up to any terrain the owner might throw at it: tarmac, concrete, maybe even gravel too. In rare cases, manufacturers might throw together a model that can actually go off the road, and the Pathfinder Rock Creek is Nissan’s weapon of choice. It’s slightly higher than the regular model and has softer suspension, plus off-road tyres. A roof rack that can support a tent will be useful for camping, and of course there are cosmetic touches like extra plastic cladding too. It’s not all exterior stuff either, as the engine gets a bump to nearly 300bhp and of course four-wheel drive comes as standard.
