Here's a little taster of some of the car highlights coming your way in Top Drives Update 28.0 - German Powerhaus Part 1
BMW M3 GTR Strassenversion (E36) 1993
Everyone loves a homologation special, and the E36 M3 GTR Strassenversion is a classic example of the breed. Unlike the normal M3 of the era, the GTR had no creature comforts and was only built to enable BMW to go racing. It even has “road version” right there in the name - not something you include unless the race version is the main event. The roadgoing M3 GTR features an aggressive bodykit, a full rollcage and a completely stripped bodyshell with no sound deadening or protection, keeping weight to a minimum. The BBS wheels are iconic for this era of performance car and they’re also part of the weight-saving, while under the bonnet there’s a larger-than-standard 3018cc version of the E36 M3’s fantastic six-cylinder motor.
BMW XM (G09) 2024
The BMW XM, according to the German car maker, combines the best of its X and M sub-brands into a monstrously powerful SUV with an incredibly bold exterior design. It’s one of only two cars completely designed by the M division, the other being the M1 supercar of 1978, and it features a hybrid powertrain with 644bhp and 590lb ft of torque, using a 4.4-litre V8 for the bulk of its power needs and an electric motor built into the gearbox for the rest. There’s even an XM “Label Red” with 738bhp for those with an even deeper hunger for performance. The XM’s power figures might seem sensational but the 2,785kg kerbweight means the XM feels like a perfect summation of the modern performance car; lightness and nimble handling are out and brute force is in.
MINI Cooper S 2002
When BMW bought and relaunched the MINI brand in the early 21st Century there were two types of people talking about them: those who said they were too big and not a true successor to the classic Mini, and those who had actually driven them. Anyone who has sat behind the wheel of an early MINI Cooper S knows that the brand’s new owners absolutely nailed the formula, as it was pure driving fun combined into a relatively practical and affordable hatchback car. It looked great thanks to the modern-retro bodywork and the Cooper S version even had a bit of engineering intrigue under the bonnet thanks to its supercharged engine. The characteristic whine from the belt-driven forced induction meant that it even sounded a bit like the classic Mini, which became known for loud gear whine.
MINI Aceman SE 2024
MINI started out in the early 2000s with hatchbacks, which were big sellers at the time, but these days it’s all about SUVs. The current range includes several including the new Aceman, a crossover that’s a bit smaller than the Countryman and is electric-only. It’s built in China and shares a lot with the normal MINI Cooper E, and in SE form has a decent 215bhp available at the front wheels. It has around 250 miles of driving range, according to official figures, and it’ll be a sensible family car for many. Yet thanks to that decent power output it can get from 0-62mph in just 7.1 seconds, which is firmly in hot hatch territory, and it has the handling to match.
